Kinetic Light Sculptures

The rich pattern archive of Elhamra Çini studio in Kütahya is a testament to the relationship of craft with culture, form and aesthetics. Created within the limited conditions of past eras, these patterns show how borderless a craft can be when it is met with passion. The kinetic light sculptures called “Spikes” are also nourished by these patterns. In this work, where the disciplines of engineering and design accompany an artistic narrative, two-dimensional traditional patterns transform into new, three-dimensional forms with movement and light. The moving patterns resembling a mystical being take the viewer to an irresistible discovery. While craft is reduced to a romantic value that has become obsolete in today’s society, “Spikes” suggests new possibilities for the current potential of craft when seen with a creative approach nourished by tradition
